Buddhism in a Nutshell

January 28 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Free
introduction to buddhism 101

“All of us want happiness and no one wants misery. Yet, despite our sincere wish, the opposite comes about. I believe the meaning and purpose of our life has to do with eradicating the causes of pain and increasing the causes of happiness, so that this deepest wish in the heart of each and every living being can be fulfilled.”

The Dalai Lama and Ven. Thubten Chodron. Approaching the Buddhist Path. The Library of Wisdom and Compassion, vol. 1. Wisdom Publications. Epub edition p. 26.

OVERVIEW:

The Buddha’s teachings are extensive and profound, and it can be difficult to know where to get started. In this short, four-class series, Ven. Losang Tendrol, an American nun ordained in the Tibetan tradition, gives a high-level overview of the teachings. The Buddha’s unique perspective on the human condition — from our entry into the world at birth through separation at the time of death — is as relevant today as it was when Buddha first taught over 2,500 years ago. By opening our hearts to others through wisdom and compassion and by living mindfully, we can remain free and undisturbed regardless of what’s going on around us.

Session 1. What did the Buddha teach and how do we deepen our understanding through meditation?

Session 2. What does it mean to be Buddhist? What is the Buddhist approach to finding freedom from suffering?

Session 3. How can we lead a meaningful life in the face of constant change and uncertainty?

Session 4. How can we find true joy by living for others instead of only ourselves?

Each class will include a presentation, guided meditation and discussion.  The course will be centered around Approaching the Buddhist Path. Volume 1 in the Library of Wisdom and Compassion

Participants will have an opportunity to complete written responses to thought questions on a variety of subjects based on the book discussion.
