OVERVIEW:

A 10-week introduction to the Sanskrit language tailored to the needs of students and translators of Tibetan Buddhism. The course will introduce proper pronunciation of Sanskrit vowels, consonants and conjuncts and the associated writing/printing script used most commonly in the contemporary era – Devanāgari. It also provides an overview of Sanskrit syntax and grammar and an introduction to verb conjugations and noun declensions. The course will allow students to properly pronounce mantras and Sanskrit Buddhist terms and acquire basic experience reading and writing Sanskrit sentences. The course also instructs effective use of online Sanskrit dictionaries and grammatical resources.

TEACHER BIOGRAPHY:

David Mellins is a Sanskrit scholar, Buddhist translator and scholar of classical Indian poetry and poetics. He received his PhD in Sanskrit from Columbia University and has taught Sanskrit at Columbia, Rutgers and Yale Universities. He served as the co-director of the Buddhist Translators Workbench, a Buddhist digital humanities initiative located in Berkeley, CA. For the past twelve years, he has worked collaboratively on translations of the Guhyasamāja Tantra, the Pradīpodyotana, the Udānavarga and the Udānavarga-vivaraṇa.
