SCHEDULE:

Day 1:  Teaching on Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga – Gaden Lhyagyama Commentary (10:00 – 4:00; lunch 12-2)

Hundred Deities of Tushita Guru Yoga Prayer

Guru Yoga or guru devotion is a form of spiritual practice that is central to Tibetan Buddhism. This stems from the principle that a spiritual teacher is the source from which all personal development originates.

There are several oral transmission lineages of guru yoga practice in the Geluk tradition that originated with its founder Je Tsongkhapa Losang Drakpey Pel (1357-1419. This one is called the “Ségyü oral-transmission lineage” because it was originally transmitted through the early masters of the Geluk Ségyü (T: srad rgyud) Tantric College, founded by Je Tsongkapa’s direct disciple Je Sherab Seng-gé in 1432, in conjunction with another disciple Duldzin Pelden Zangpo (1402-1473). The verse version of the practice was composed sometime later by Gyüchen Sang-gyé Gyatso (fl. Between 15th and 16h centuries), one of the abbots of this monastery, after which the practice came to be taught more widely.

NOTE:  For Day 1 a box lunch will be provided to those in attendance.

Day 2:  Avalokiteshvara Initiation (Day 2 ends around noon)

Avalokiteshvara Permission or Authorization Blessing

The deity Avalokiteshvara, whose name literally means “Watchful Lord,” is an enlightened being whose nature is the compassion of all the ten directions’ Buddhas’ made manifest in a physical form. He is regarded as the patron deity of Tibet. It is said that addressing supplications to him will result in receiving his blessings swiftly. His “Permission Blessing” means a ritual that confers upon a disciple the permission or authority to recite the particular mantra and carry out the specific meditation practices associated with this lineage and teaching system.
