Approaching the uncommon practices and realizations of Vajrayāna, which is known as the “quick path” to attaining full awakening of a Buddha, is like entering the gateway to an entire new world filled with practices and experiences that previous are unknown to one who decides to enter.

So, how best to judge and decide if one should enter this path?

In this series we’ll attempt to illuminate the unique qualities and complexities of Vajrayāna, and give you a glimpse into the unique methods it offers to eradicate the subtlest obscurations preventing the full awakening of a buddha.

Although geared to newcomers, experienced students we’ll certainly benefit too as we’ll explain the similarities and differences of the Sūtra and Tantra paths. Having gathered many of the doubts and difficult points concerning pursue a practice on the tantric path, we’ll utilize texts by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama as well as other authoritative texts, to help it all make sense. The following topics are included:

• The purpose of receiving a proper empowerment from a qualified guru
• The meaning of the ethical restraints and commitments required to enter the path of secret mantra
• What are the paths and stages of the four tantric classes
• What are the generation-stage and completion-stage practices of Highest Yoga Tantra
• What is a sādhana practice, which is the essence of generation stage practice, and how is that different from completion stage practice
• The difference between a tantric empowerment (wang) and a tantric blessing (jenang)
• What are the practices of clear appearance and divine pride or identity common to all tantric sādhanas, as well as the unique practices of illusory body and actual clear light that overcome the subtlest defilements on the mind and eliminate all obscurations quickly
• The understanding of emptiness in Sūtra and Tantra is the same, but the consciousness perceiving emptiness differs. What does that look like?
